I began working in the machining trade while still in high school. After roughly twelve years in conventional machining, I moved into CNC machining and programming in 1990 and have worked in that environment ever since.
Over the years, my work has expanded from programming individual parts to developing complete machining processes — programming, tooling, workholding, setup strategy, machine capability, and prove-out.
I have worked with Mastercam since 1998 and use it for everything from straightforward 3-axis work through complex multiaxis programming and process development.
I approach programming from the standpoint of someone who understands what has to happen at the machine. A program needs to do more than produce the correct geometry.
The setup has to be practical, the workholding has to be reliable, the tooling needs to make sense, clearances need to be considered, and the process needs to be something the people on the shop floor can actually run. That is the standard I bring to contract programming work.
I started Design Concepts Engineering to provide machine shops with experienced CNC programming and process-development support without requiring them to add another full-time programmer.
Some customers need help with a single difficult job. Others need additional programming capacity when their own department is overloaded. In either case, I work within the shop’s existing machines, tooling, workholding, posts, and procedures rather than expecting the shop to adapt to mine.
